Turkel has been raised in Manhattan and comes from an ethnically Jewish, middle class family, was a student at the Neighborhood Playhouse and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy when she was 16 years old. Ann was spotted at an Vogue Magazine fashion show by Gloria Schiff, an editor. In less than a week the editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland commissioned Ann to shoot the first Vogue Cover with photographer Richard Avedon. Ann then became one the most wanted models in the nation, gracing the covers of some of the most popular fashion magazines. This comprised Vogue Bazaar as well Cosmopolitan. Two years later, Ann hit the international markets performing well in Europe and Japan as the face of such cosmetic giants as Max Factor Revlon and Chanel.
